Overages let your application keep receiving rates after you reach your package's monthly rate request limit, instead of having your API access paused until the next cycle. Requests beyond your limit are billed at the end of each month.
To turn overages on, you need a credit card saved on your account. Overages don't work without one.
In this article, we'll cover:
- How overages work
- How to turn overages on
- How to turn overages off
- How overages are billed
- Who can use overages
How overages work
Every package includes a monthly number of rate requests. Without overages, the API stops returning rates once you've used 100% of that allowance.
With overages turned on:
- the API keeps returning rates after you reach your limit
- each request beyond your limit is charged at your overage rate
- the Web App shows the number of overage requests made this cycle and your projected charge
- you won't receive the 75%, 90% and 100% usage alert emails, as there's no interruption to warn you about
How to turn overages on
Existing customers
- Sign in to the Web App.
- In the Monthly Usage panel, select Enable overages.
- Check the plan and overage pricing shown in the confirmation window.
- Select Confirm.
You'll also find a link to turn on overages in your 75%, 90% and 100% usage alert emails.
New customers
You can choose to turn on overages when you sign up. You can change this at any time afterwards.
How to turn overages off
You can turn overages off at any time from the Web App. Once they're off, the API will stop returning rates when you reach your monthly limit, and you'll receive the 75%, 90% and 100% usage alerts again.
Any overage requests already made in the current cycle will still be billed.
How overages are billed
- Overage charges are calculated at the end of each monthly cycle and charged to the card on your account.
- The overage rate for your package is shown before you confirm. To see how your projected charge was calculated, hover over it in the Web App.
- There's no cap on overage charges, so keep an eye on the Monthly Usage panel if your volumes change.
- If we can't collect an overage payment, we'll turn off overages on your account and your normal monthly limit will apply again.
Who can use overages
Overages are currently available to customers who pay for their subscription by credit or debit card. If you pay by wire transfer and would like to use overages, email data@xe.com to ask about switching to card payment.
